Together they created a fully functioning professional puppet theatre built inside natural walnut and hazelnut shells, featuring a stage measuring up to 3 centimetres and working theatrical puppets from 2.5 millimetres. The achievement unites two disciplines that rarely meet at such a scale, the fine art of miniature craftsmanship and the working mechanics of a real theatrical stage, and it stands as a striking example of patience, precision and imagination.

The official record date is 22.07.2026. The record was inspected and verified at the Historical Park Museum Complex known as Russia My History, located in Omsk, Russia. An independent and neutral official witness, described as the Director of the Historical Park Museum Complex, an author and a cultural expert, personally examined the piece. The witness confirmed that the miniature puppet theatre, its stage environment and its mechanical elements were fully functional and that the dimensions and authenticity were accurate. This formal inspection gave the attempt the structure and accountability expected of a recognized world record rather than a claim made without proof. What sets this record apart is that the theatre does not simply look like a stage. It works like one. Inside a shell that fits comfortably in the palm of a hand, a complete miniature stage supports a moving performance. The working theatrical puppets, starting from 2.5 millimetres, can be animated to tell a story, and the surrounding stage has been built to behave exactly as a full-sized theatre would, only in miniature. Creating a static model at this scale is already difficult.

Creating one where the curtain, the lighting and the puppets all function is an achievement of an entirely different order.

The mechanisms are the heart of the piece. A dynamic curtain, painted onto faux suede, is fitted with a built-in drawstring system. Pulling an external cord finished with a small bead draws and lifts the curtain, which then locks against the back of the shell using an internal magnet, revealing a second scene. The lighting has been externalized for safety and durability, with the LED, its power source and all wiring integrated into a plywood display stand. That stand serves two purposes at once, holding the shell open at the correct viewing angle and illuminating the stage from a safe distance. The micro-puppets themselves, starting from 2.5 millimetres, are animated by hand using rigid yet flexible wire rods, some as fine as 0.4 millimetres, operated from below, above and the sides of the stage. The materials reflect the same careful balance between the natural and the engineered. The base and scenery combine plywood, pine, birch, cardboard, heavy paper, tissue paper and transparent PET plastic. The miniatures and puppets use walnut and hazelnut shell halves, polymer clay, wire, brass hardware, twill tape and a neodymium magnet. Textiles and fibres include faux suede, natural moss, cotton wool, sheep’s wool, cotton, sewing threads and a metallic lurex thread, while acrylic paints, glue and glitter provide the finishes. Two halves of a natural walnut shell, together with a natural hazelnut shell, are hinged with twill tape and secured on the opposite side by a brass box latch that works on a loop and pin mechanism.

This intricate construction was completed in just over two weeks, across roughly fifteen to seventeen days of intensive crafting. Working at this scale demands a steady hand, sharp eyesight and a deep understanding of how tiny components behave under stress. Every hinge, cord and rod must function reliably, because at these dimensions there is little margin for error and almost no room for repair. The result is a piece that is not only beautiful to look at but robust enough to be operated and demonstrated, which is precisely what a functioning theater requires. Behind the record stand two collaborators whose skills complement one another. Yulia Mikhaleva is the author of the idea and the director, and the founder of LEV, an independent experimental theater company.

Elena Ivanova is the project artist whose craftsmanship gives the miniature world its form and detail. Their partnership has produced a pioneering stage format, an innovative cycle of micro performances crafted inside natural walnut shells. This particular miniature production format has been officially copyrighted and patented, underlining both its originality and the seriousness with which the company approaches its work.

The first performance in a natural walnut shell took place on 15.12.2024. The LEV Experimental Theater has built a distinctive repertoire around this format. Its theatrical cycle currently consists of three performances, titled The Miracle of the Squirrel, adapted from A. Schmachtl, How the Little Squirrel Wanted to Celebrate the New Year, and How the Little Squirrel Felt Something, the latter two written by Yulia Mikhaleva. These works show that the walnut shell theatre is not a single novelty but a genuine performance platform capable of carrying complete stories, each staged within the same extraordinary constraints of size.
