Establishment of a New Official World Record for Animal Rehabilitation in India

On 3 December 2025, a significant milestone in animal welfare and rehabilitation was achieved in India when OWRofficially certified Shree Bidada Sarvodaya Trust and Jaya Rehabilitation Institute & Research Center for establishing a new official world record in the category “Most Cows Fitted with Prosthetic Limbs in Less Than Eight Hours.” This achievement highlights the growing role of professional rehabilitation practices in improving the quality of life for injured animals through structured medical care and assistive technology.

The record attempt took place at Kamdhenu Gau Seva Trust, specifically at its Gau Saarvar Kendra located near Sanidev Mandir on the Aadipur–Anjar Highway in Megpar Khumbaradi, Anjar, within the Kutch District of Gujarat, India. This location is well known for its commitment to the care and protection of cattle, making it a suitable and ethical setting for such an event. The record was conducted on the occasion of World Disability Day, a date that symbolically reinforced the event’s focus on rehabilitation, inclusion and functional recovery.

The official record involved the successful fitting of functional prosthetic limbs to ten injured cows within a time span of less than eight hours. The event commenced at 10:51 a.m. and concluded at 12:40 p.m., completing the task well within the stipulated time frame defined by the record category. Of the ten cows treated, eight had hind limb amputations and two had front limb amputations. Each animal had previously suffered limb loss due to injury or medical necessity and required prosthetic support to regain mobility.

The execution of the record attempt followed a systematic and medically supervised process. Before prosthetic fitting, each cow underwent a thorough veterinary examination to ensure fitness for the procedure. Only after receiving medical clearance were the animals included in the prosthetic fitting process. This step ensured that animal welfare and safety remained the highest priority throughout the event.

Prosthetic fabrication and fitting were led by Mr. Hemant Meniya, a qualified Prosthetist and Orthotist, supported by Mr. H. P. Kubal, Prosthetic Technician. Their work focused on ensuring correct alignment, comfort, hygiene and functional stability of each prosthetic limb. Strict attention was paid to stump cleanliness and infection prevention, reflecting professional rehabilitation standards typically applied in human prosthetic care and adapted appropriately for animals.

Once fitted, each cow was assisted into a standing position and carefully observed for weight bearing ability. After successful weight bearing, the cows were monitored for walking and balance and then released into an open space to assess natural movement using the prosthetic limb. All ten cows responded positively, demonstrating acceptance of the prostheses and the ability to take steps independently. Importantly, no injuries, complications or distress were reported during or after the procedures, confirming the safety and effectiveness of the process.

The event was conducted under the leadership of Mr. Vijay Chheda, Chairman of Shree Bidada Sarvodaya Trust, with overall supervision by Mr. Mukesh Doshi, Director of Shree Bidada Sarvodaya Trust and Jaya Rehabilitation Institute & Research Center. The coordinated efforts of the Jaya Rehabilitation Team ensured accurate documentation, technical precision and adherence to ethical standards throughout the record attempt.

Independent witnesses, including medical and academic professionals, observed the event to validate transparency and compliance with record guidelines. Their presence added credibility and ensured that all procedures were conducted in accordance with professional and ethical expectations.

This world record holds importance beyond numerical achievement. It demonstrates that rehabilitation science and prosthetic technology can be effectively extended to animal care, offering injured animals renewed mobility and improved quality of life. The initiative also reflects a growing awareness of disability management in animals, aligning with broader global discussions on welfare, compassion and sustainability.

In conclusion, the certification by OWR of this record stands as a meaningful achievement in the field of animal rehabilitation. The successful fitting of prosthetic limbs to ten cows in under eight hours on World Disability Day serves as a powerful example of how structured medical expertise, teamwork and ethical responsibility can come together to create lasting positive impact. This record not only sets a benchmark in animal prosthetic care but also reinforces India’s contribution to innovative and compassionate animal welfare practices.
